On
one busy day Peter and some faithful followers thought that Jesus was either
being unreasonable or maybe looking for an opportunity to teach from the
library of His divine parables. In the midst of crowds Jesus asked who touched My clothes? (Mk. 5:30).
They
were on a mission to raise a dead girl. And as Jesus, the Healer was in town
everyone wanted to catch a glimpse of Him or to salute Him. The crowds were
many and the pressure was intense. Yet Jesus asked who deliberately touched
Him. The people in that jurisdiction were so much so that if someone
deliberately touches you it’ll be just a waste of time trying to fine who did
what. But Jesus knowing what had happen in Him cared to ask.
Peter
and those who heard Jesus’ question responded to Jesus, You see the multitude thronging You, and You say, ‘Who touched me?” This
sounds like “Hey, come on, that’s
ridiculous. Look at the number of people here. I can’t even feel my legs and
the right side of my body yet you want to know who touched you?” But Jesus said, “Somebody touched Me, for I
PERCEIVED POWER GOING OUT FROM ME.” (Lk.
8:46) Jesus was telling the people that I know that many people are
thronging upon me but a touch from someone has drawn quantum power from me.
This
was the time when a woman, having a flow
of blood for twelve years…came from
behind and touched the border of His garment.(Lk. 8:43, 44) The condition
of the woman is that which caused power to leave Jesus. She was unclean and all
the multitudes had been made unclean by her.
How
do I mean? “‘If a woman has a discharge of blood for many days, other than at the
time of her customary impurity, or if it runs beyond her usual time of
impurity, all the days of her unclean discharge shall be as the days of her
customary impurity. She shall be unclean. Every bed on which she lies all the
days of her discharge shall be to her as the bed of her impurity; and whatever
she sits on shall be unclean, as the uncleanness of her impurity. Whoever
touches those things shall be unclean; he shall wash his clothes and bathe in
water, and be unclean until evening.” (Lev. 15:25-27)
This
woman by her actions made all the people she made contact with unclean. Not
only that, but all who were made unclean by her also made others they touched
unclean. It’s like a chain reaction. The power that moved out of Jesus did not
only heal the woman; it also made all the unclean multitudes clean. Great power
is that which required for sanctifying crowds at once. According to the law
after the priest has performed the cleansing he too was supposed to cleanse
himself. So the power that surged out of Jesus did marvelous things.
Just
a touch from one suffering women released great power without any laying on of
hands. What happened? The woman touched the border of Jesus’ garment with faith
in that Jesus said to her, “Daughter
YOUR FAITH has made you well. Go in
peace, and be healed of your affliction” (Mk. 5:34)
Power
responds to faith not to reasoning or intellectualism. Without permission from
Jesus the woman’s faith drew great power from the Lord. I would that all
believers cease to throng and press on Jesus and rather touch Him with faith,
for its only through that that power can be released to accomplish the things
too magnificent even for our imagination.
