“Seest
thou how Ahab humbleth himself before me? Because he humbleth himself before
me, I will not bring the evil in his days...” (1Kings 21:29)
The verse 25 declares this about
Ahab, “But there was none like unto Ahab, which did sell himself to work
wickedness in the sight of the LORD, whom Jezebel his wife stirred up.”
The whole
of the chapter shows how Jezebel killed Naboth for her husband Ahab, the king
of Samaria, to possess the vineyard of Naboth. The bible says Ahab is so wicked
that there is none like him in wickedness. The act of Jezebel displeased God so
Elijah the prophet was sent by God to pronounce judgment on Ahab and his
household.
The most intriguing thing is that he
showed great act of humility before God: “And it came to pass when Ahab heard those
words, that he rent his clothes, and he put sackcloth upon his flesh, and
fasted, and lay in sackcloth, and went softly.” (v. 27). This act of
humility moved God to change His pronouncement by declaring what is in the
verse 29 above.
“Seest
thou how Ahab humbleth himself before me? Because he humbleth himself before
me, I will not bring the evil in his days...”
Humble yourself and God will exalt you!
"Humble
yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up." (James
4:10)
"And whosoever
shall exalt himself shall be abased; and he that shall humble himself shall be
exalted." (Matt. 23:12)
