From generation to generation, God uses men to bless the
whole of humanity and we have been blessed by scores of them. In the midst of
all these great people, D.L. Moody is a name worth mentioning, not just for a
life well lived but mainly for the rich examples of true Christianity in the
life of this one man and how massively he imparted so many lives.
To talk about
D.L. Moody in a very brief period of time and paint the perfect picture of who
he was and what he stood for, will be an impossible feat to accomplish but it
is worth a try though.
On February 5, 1837, Dwight Lyman Moody, the sixth of seven
sons of Edwin and Betsy Holton Moody, was born in Northfield (which lies where
three States meet Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Vermont). At age 4, his father
died leaving a very large family for his mother to take care of which she did
an excellent job of raising. This event was one Dwight never forgot. He had the
privilege to live with Rev. Mr. Everett and his family in order to attend
school (which he was not so faithful to). At age 17, as was the norm of the
time, he set out to look for a job, which was not easy but he ended up in his
uncle’s shoe shop (where he got converted later) with a lot conditions
attached. He later moved to Chicago with a letter from his uncle to work with
Mr. Wiswall.
It was in Chicago that his passion to serve his Divine Master was
put to use. He started recruiting boys and girls for Sunday School then went on
later to start a Mission School. He proved to be one who knew how to move the
masses regardless of his deficit in education. His meetings attract many, even
the very elite in society to the point that Lincoln (President-elect) was at
one of his meetings. He was one of the greatest evangelists to have ever lived.
He loved to deal with difficult people.
One thing that was exceptional about him was his devotion
towards his mother.
