The
creation of mankind was completed in the chapter one of the book of Genesis.
Yet the writer in the chapter two elaborates on creation in entirety, not
leaving to confusion what he began previously on the creation of man. In the chapter
two we see something which seems contradictory to what was began in the chapter
one. For this reason some people have concluded that there were two different
creations i.e. chapters one and two. And others have generally out of lack of
revelation established that the creation story is a myth. But there is only one
creation story as far as the Scriptures is concerned, i.e. Genesis chapter one,
of which the chapter two explicates.
From
Genesis 2:20-25 we notice that Adam unlike all the animals was without a helper
of the same kind. And God took Adam’s rib to create a woman. This seems quite
different from the “…created man…male and
female…” in chapter one verse twenty-seven.
The account in chapter one is
the fabrication of the spirit of man. Chapter two nonetheless is about the
creation of the body with clay. The fusion of the spirit and the body (which
was done by breathing into nostrils)
produced the soul “…and man became a
living soul…” (2:7). For man (which was spirit in Genesis chapter one) to exist
on the earth his spirit must abide in a body. [The earth realm is made for
physical beings not spirit beings. Spirit beings have their own realm where they
operate, the spirit or supernatural realm. For this reason spirit beings require
bodies to dwell in order to operate on the earth realm. An example is the
demons who asked Jesus to cast them into swine in Mark chapter five. For in
their spirit form they cannot be related to.] The fusion of the spirit with the
body generates the soul. Thus Adam and Eve could know they were naked and yet
were not ashamed (2:25). Nakedness was nonexistent when “man…male and female…” was created because “man” was without soul.
God,
however, made Adam first to have a soul life before He brought Eve as his wife
to assist him in the task of subduing the earth. He had received a soul or a
natural life and for that matter he was subject to weary. The woman was brought
to assist the man. More than that together with man, the woman can reproduce
life. Marriage is primarily for companionship but God commanded both of them,
male and female to be fruitful and multiply, which is a reason why marriage
ought not to be between same sexes.
God
Himself instituted marriage and cautioned mankind not put asunder what He has
joined. The fact is that no man is credible enough to do that. He made man…male and female which was still
breath (spirit) and commanded them to produce after their kind (which will involve
marriage). It is imperative that the joining of two to become one flesh is
actually the joining of two spirits to reside in two separate bodies to live
one life. Man…male and female… was
made for each other. Even before they became flesh God expected them to be together
and multiply. Marriage originated the very moment God created mankind.
