BIOGRAPHY OF CHARLES SPURGEON

Let me borrow the words of W.Y. Fullerton concerning Charles Spurgeon; “the contemporary sketches of the life of Spurgeon are an interesting conglomerate of significant facts, but they scarcely give an adequate picture of the man as he lived and laboured with such prodigious energy.” What I intend to do here is give you a picture of the life of the great personality, as brief as I can.

He was born Charles Haddon Spurgeon on June 19, 1834 to John Spurgeon and his wife, who was a sibling of Charles Parker, in Kolvedon, Essex (England). He lived in the Victorian England and died at age 57 on January 31, 1892. He was a Baptist; actually one of the most famous English Baptist preacher in the 19th century. At age 6, he read the Pilgrim’s Progress, then consequently went on to read it about a 100 times. At Colchester, January 6, 1850, he got converted and baptised in the river Lark, at Isleham on May 3, 1850. Afterwards, Charles Spurgeon’s life has been full of exploits. At age 16, he started teaching Sunday School with so much success that later he was contacted to be a weekly preacher of a church nearby which he pastored for 3 years. During those years, the membership of that church doubled. It was said that by age 20, Charles had preached over 600 times. He was known to have preached 10 times a week and it is estimated that he preached to 10,000,000 people in his lifetime. He was one of the greatest evangelists ever, and his written sermons are estimated to have been read by 20 to 40 million people. A woman got converted by reading a single page of one of Spurgeon’s sermons wrapped around some butter she bought. He was married to Susannah, who bore him twin sons (they all became preachers); Thomas succeeded his father as pastor of the Tabernacle and Charles Jr. took charge of the orphanage his  father founded.

I am sure a lot of people do not know this, but his wife, Susannah, used to call him “Tirshatha”, a Judean title, which means “Your Excellency”.
