FLOURISHING LIKE A PALM TREE (Psalm 92:12)

The first day I came across this particular scripture “The righteous shall flourish like the palm tree...” my desire to become righteous increased. That was many years ago but still every time I read it I desire more righteousness. It is a great thing to be righteous. The Holy Word of God says that the righteous shall flourish like a palm tree not an orange tree or an apple. I am so excited about palm (tree) because of its uniqueness and much blessedness. I am going to share with you certain things about the palm which makes the flourishing of the righteous so exceptional.

Growth and survival: Palms are evergreen plants belonging to the family Palmae or Arecaceae, which grow mostly in the tropics. Tropic is however the region of the earth centered on the equator and lying between the Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn and characterized by a hot climate. Isn't this interesting? That a tree which does not shed it leaves seasonally could be very successful in adverse conditions? The reason is because such trees are self-renewing; their ability to remain continually fresh is from within. This is the characteristic of a righteous person, a person who survives (and succeeds) under any (adverse) condition because of the power of the Holy Spirit within.

Durability: It’s rare and likely impossible for a palm tree to be broken by strong winds. It has the ability to bend to touch the ground but never will it break. Stress and pressure are not good enough to destroy this particular plant. The righteous will flourish such that pressure and stress cannot overcome them.

Protection and shelter: The wealth of the righteous is protected just as the palm tree is protected by spines. Moreover the palm tree provides shade, it leaves are used to make fences and its wood as building materials. This same way the righteous is a shelter unto many. Shelter represents comfort, favour, care, hospitality and sense of security.

The fruits: The fruit of the palm tree is food for many people in the world today. My favourite is palm nut soup with fufu. This however symbolize that the righteous will be so much blessed that many people would benefit from their blessing. Also edible plant oil can be derived from the mesocarp of the fruit. Oil has been used widely in Christendom to represent anointing. Aside many people benefiting from the blessing of the righteous, the anointing upon the righteous is such that all humanity is a beneficiary. [See 7 Fold anointing of Cyrus]

The sap: Again delicious wine can be derived from the sap. Wine represents celebration, which is why it’s served at ceremonies. Righteous people are people who bring celebration and joy into the lives of many.

The wood: Wood from the palm tree is very useful for firewood. Fire is also a symbol for revival. The righteous will flourish and at the same time experience the revival power of God. Nevertheless righteous people are agents of revival too.

Oh such a glorious reward for righteousness has our God and King destined for us. It is worth every price to be righteous for the reward is marvelous beyond the riches of this present age. My last words – covet righteousness and you shall be established like a palm tree.
