Part 1 – Sorcery of Balaam

Lesson – What Inspires Your Service For God?

“Now when Balaam saw that it pleased the Lord to bless Israel, he did not go as at other times, to seek to use sorcery, but he set his face toward the wilderness”. (Numbers 24:1)

Balaam is described in the Bible as a prophet of God but he was not one who was approved by God to operate in the ministry of the prophet.
His prophecies were not inspired by God. He was one who declared curses or blessings by divinations, enchantments and witchcraft. Balaam was not a genuine prophet. He did not speak by the inspiration of the Spirit of God. The scripture above clearly indicates that Balaam used sorcery – enchantments and divinations – to curse or bless. He did not receive his message from God. People thought he was a genuine prophet of God, someone whom God spoke to directly because when he was consulted to curse the people of God, he asked to see God before agreeing to do it. 

The princes of Moab thought he was one who consulted God but he used sorcery. Also in Numbers 23:23, Balaam declares that there is no enchantment or divination against the people of God. He had used enchantments and divinations against Israel but it was to no avail. Balak hired Balaam to curse the people of God because he was aware of the truth that spiritual warfare has effect in the physical. He knew that for the people of Israel to be defeated they had to be overcome spiritually. Balak was afraid of the people of God because of the testimonies he had heard about them so he consulted Balaam to curse them but the God of Israel had blessed them.

This man Balaam was not inspired by the Lord. God may have spoken to him a few times but he was not a genuine prophet. There are many who claim to work for God in the office of the prophet but do not receive their inspiration from God. They employ all sorts of demonic practices – sorcery, witchcraft, divination, enchantments, astral projections and even the latent power of the soul. Many people are inspired by their want for money. They lie, cheat and use people for their own gain. They do not access God for the people but deceive them into thinking that they receive their inspiration from God. Balaam made the Balak think that his source was God but it wasn’t. He always resorted to sorcery. 

Many people have alienated themselves from God and are employing the use of sorcery to manipulate people for their own gain. Many who also are called by God and have not separated themselves unto a life of holiness and total consecration end up being inspired by familiar spirits. They do not stick to a life of holiness. They fornicate, lie, abuse and some even murder. This makes them open to familiar spirits.

The ministry of Balaam was not inspired by God, it was inspired by the want of riches and jewelry. For our service to God to be genuine and fully rewarded, we must receive our inspiration directly from God. We must live our lives according to the word of God and be fully committed to His will.
