For me
being a leader is a responsibility and a calling. As far as we can influence
someone we qualify to be leaders. This means we are obliged to be responsible
leaders because we have been called by God to lead either directly or
indirectly. Mankind is accountable to God for every leadership role committed
unto us. Whether being an older brother or uncle or deacon or cell leader or
class prefect or teaching assistant or usher you are a leader. God appoints us into all these
positions. Becoming a mum or a dad is a leadership role whose employer is God.
Let every individual be obedient to those who rule over him;
for no one is a ruler except by God’s
permission, and our present rulers
have had their rank and power assigned to them by Him. (Rom. 13:1,
Weymouth)
It
therefore fulfilling for a leader appointed by God to have very good qualities
so as to give a good account to God. Let’s quickly look at some qualities of a
good leader. This will help prune us, for us to grow into the leaders that God
wants us to be.
First of
all a good leader is a good manager of money and resources. Both spendthrifts
and misers are potentially not good leaders. Knowing when, how and why
resources must be used is a characteristic of good leaders. Good leaders know
when to buy or repair, build or rent.
A good
leader is a learner. I have always said that leadership ends when we stop
learning. Learning from both other good leaders and followers is a sign of great
leadership. One way to learn from other leaders is through reading. As the
saying goes leaders are readers. Leaders can best learn from their followers if
the stop seeing them as their slaves.
Another
quality of a good leader is his ability to work effectively under pressure. It
is one quality I keep stressing to my church members. Everybody can work under
a certain amount of pressure but a true leader is unrelenting until maximum
results are achieved under great pressures.
Good
leaders are team builders. Many people fail because they do not work as team
members. In Africa we are taught that a broom can’t be broken when together
because of unity. A team, like a broom can prevail if they remain together. The
leader is the rope which is used to bind the broom. A good leader binds the
team and together their goal is achieved.
Finally a
good leader is a record keeper. I believe this one of the most neglected part
of leadership. All kinds of records must be taken. Some leaders don’t have any
records of their followers or employees; where the live, their family, their
bills, their health etc. All records are rather about their goals from which
they will get their profits. But I am absolutely sure that maximum productivity
can be achieved if the workers have sound mind.
