THE MIRROR OF LIFE

A mirror is a shiny metal or glass that reflects an image when light is directed onto it without diffusing it. Hence the mirror presents a carbon copy of the object placed before it. There is a mirror of life that reveals who we are and betrays us when we portray ourselves differently. This mirror of life is the heart of man.

Proverbs 27:19 – “As in water face reflects face, so a man’s heart reveals the man”.

The heart of man is what presents us with the inner being of a person. It is what shows our deepest desires and hopes. It is our heart that will give us a future and a fortune. Hence, our future is dependent on what is in our hearts. We cannot become who we are not. Our hearts will definitely betray us whenever we behave hypocritically. Matthew 7:18-20 says, “A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor can a bad tree bear good fruit. Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. Therefore by their fruits you will know them”. This scripture explicitly reveals that bad cannot come from good and good cannot come from bad. A bad unregenerate heart cannot produce good deeds and a good heart cannot produce bad deeds.

Our hearts (the mirror of life) is bound to reveal who we are – whether we are of good hearts or we are of bad hearts – by our actions and reactions. The Bible states that out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks. This reveals that the mouth mostly brings out what is nurtured in the heart. Our speech is the surest way to betray our outward personality.

Jesus knew what was in the heart of all men and as such he viewed things differently and related to people differently. In Luke 13:31-32, Jesus called Herod a fox when He was warned to leave town because Herod was after Him. He knew Herod in the heart and saw that his human appearance was just a camouflage for the fox he was inside his heart. John the Baptist preached about repentance unto God and about the coming of the Christ. His message caused the Pharisees to come for his baptism. When they had come, he called them a brood of vipers (Luke 3:1-8). People were seeing the Pharisees as normal people but John knew what was in their hearts - brood of vipers. Again Paul wrote to the church in Corinth saying he was at the mercy of beasts in Ephesus (1 Cor. 15:32). He was talking about those who withstood the gospel of Christ in Ephesus. He knew their hearts were full of an ambition for riches and were committed to idol worship. (See BEASTLY MEN)

Christians need to develop good hearts by putting to death their old hearts which is full of the lust of the eyes, the lust of the flesh and the pride of life. The Bible says that until a grain falls to the ground and dies it remains fruitless. In essence we must endeavour to put to death the deeds of the flesh for abundant life to be birth in our spirits. We should nurture good hearts in ourselves full of the love of God, hope and faith in God.
