JESUS CHRIST - THE LAUNDERER’S SOAP

“But who can endure the day of His coming? And who can stand when He appears? For He is like a refiner’s fire and like a LAUNDERER’S SOAP.” (Mal. 3:2)

In the scripture above Christ is described as a Launderer’s Soap. Soap is used to wash or clean items. It has the ability to transform an object from a state of uncleanliness to a state of cleanliness. God says Christ came to the earth realm as a Launderer’s Soap. I strongly believe that this is because the world is filled with unclean people who need to be washed unto holiness. “let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water.” (Heb. 10:22)

The word cleanliness is synonymous to holiness. Christ came that we might live a life of holiness (Hebrews 9:14). Becoming holy is not our responsibility per se, it is rather Christ’s. However, staying holy is our responsibility. Jesus Christ came to wash us from our sins and make us holy.

James 4:8 says, “…Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded”. The word ‘hands’ here refers to our actions and deeds which are performed according to our conscience. Our conscience is the sense of right and wrong. It judges our actions, reveals our intent and witnesses our intent to judgment. Many people sin because their conscience is agrees with it and Christ came to cleanse this conscience of ours so that we can serve Him eternally.

The Bible reveals some different types of consciences. Let us take a quick look:
  1. Evil Conscience. People with evil conscience are those who make evil their sport and perform evil deeds without regrets. (Heb. 10:22)
  2. Weak Conscience. People with weak conscience are people without self-control and discipline. Their conscience is easily wounded by the actions of other people. (1 Cor. 8:12)
  3. Defiled Conscience. People with defiled conscience are people who have been ‘brainwashed’. They have a totally different opinion of right and wrong (Ti. 1:15).
  4. Conscience seared with a hot iron. These are the hypocrites who live a life falsehood.  (1 Tim. 4:2)
  5. Conscience without offense. People with this type of conscience are people who do not hold onto grudges and easily forgive people. They live holy lives and hence have confidence before God and man. These are matured Christians who have the ability to forgive others. (Acts 24:16)
  6. Good Conscience. Possessing a good conscience is about holding onto a good opinion and maintaining a peace with all men. (1 Tim. 1:5)
  7. Pure Conscience. Having this kind of conscience is more or less living with a ‘heavenly mindset’ devoid of the smallest iota o sin.  (1 Tim 3:9, 2 Tim. 1:3)

Most Christians think that faith is the only thing God expects from us but without holiness our faith is of no effect. Not being holy gives the flesh preeminence over our spirit man. We need to stay holy after Jesus Christ – the Launderer’s Soap has washed and cleansed our consciences onto holiness.
