Part 2: TILLER OF THE GROUND

Lesson 1 - CARNALLY MINDEDNESS

In this part of the series, we will get to know some of the works which caused Cain to fall. God actually did not want Cain to fall from His glory but due to certain actions he (Cain) managed to backslide majestically. “So the Lord said to Cain, "Why are you angry? And why has your countenance fallen? If you do well, will you not be accepted? And if you do not do well, sin lies at the door. And its desire is for you, but you should rule over it."” (Gen. 4:6-7)

Scripture Reading:

“Then she bore again, this time his brother Abel. Now Abel was a keeper of sheep, but Cain was a tiller of the ground.” (Gen. 4:2)

A tiller of the ground here means he was a farmer. The ground was cursed by God after Adam and Eve sinned “…Cursed is the ground for your sake…” (Gen. 3:17) and Cain was a tiller of it. The ground is like a womb because it can bring forth, and here is the case the ground was cursed. Anything produced from the cursed ground would not be any better than cursed too.

In this lesson I am going to allegorically represent the ground with the mind. The mind is infinite and very neutral. You choose where the mind should be; whether with God or with the devil. So the ground here represents the mind; a place of conception. What you think is what you become so to live right you need to think right. This will imply that a cursed ground should represent carnally-mindedness. The Bible says, to be carnally minded is death and to be spiritually minded is life and peace (Rom. 8:6). Therefore considering Cain as a tiller of the cursed ground means he was dabbling in carnality. An agenda baptized in carnality cannot please God in any way. Obstinate Cain was on the path of displeasing God.

Carnality also has to do with materialism (1 Cor. 9:11, Rom. 15:27). As Paul mentioned of the carnal law does not mean it is not spiritual. The law is spiritual just that it does not minister anything unto the inner man. For example when someone has sex with another’s spouse it is adultery according to the law. But according to the law Jesus Christ adultery is lust in the heart. Everything about the law affects the outside. When the mind is corrupted, anything you bring forth is also corrupted. Everything about Cain was about things of the outward. Because of his corrupted mind and carnality, he could not celebrate his brother’s victory. One thing about victory and winning is when you can celebrate someone’s victory as if it were your own. If you cannot celebrate someone’s victory as if it were your own, then you do not deserve your own victory.

Carnality is when ENVY, STRIFE, and DIVISION make their home in our soul. “But if you have bitter envy and self-seeking in your hearts, do not boast and lie against the truth. This wisdom does not descend from above, but is earthly, sensual, demonic. For where envy and self-seeking exist, confusion and every evil thing are there” (James 3:14-16) The tragedy of Cain could be the downfall of anyone who follows after carnality of mind.
